ABOUT ME

I was born in Rotherham in 1944, my father being a partner in the family business of LA Ratcliffe, Printer and Stationer. I attended Herringthorpe primary school, Mattersey Hall Preparatory School, Repton School and The Queen’s College Oxford where I obtained second class honours in Natural Sciences (Physics). After four years working for Plessey in electronics I was persuaded in 1969 to join the family business in which I stayed till it closed in 2007.

1969 was also the year I met my wife Mary and we were married the following year, and then had two daughters. Sadly, after nearly 30 years of happy marriage, Mary died from lymphoma in 1999. I am now retired, with interests in Rotary, sailing and rambling all of which keep me busy. Below are details and links to organisations to which I belong:

John has been a member of the Rotary Club of Rotherham since 1977 including Club President in the 75th Anniversary year 1995-96.  In 2003, I was awarded a Paul Harris Fellowship for my service to the community. Currently I'm involved in the Club running a newly formed dementia café. Click on the photo of John & Mary at District Conference for more information about the Club and the Rotary movement in general.

From the age of 12, John has been keen on dinghy racing mainly in Enterprises, National 12s and Solos having been a member of Rotherham SC, Oxford University YC, Northampton SC and Welbeck SC where he held office for 25 years. He then joined West Riding SC with his Solo, and for six years was its Hon. Treasurer. Old age and failing health have now sadly meant parting with the boat

On retirement, John joined the Rotherham Metro Group of Ramblers. (click on logo for website) He leads three or four walks each year, mainly from his book of Railway walks (see booklets) and is on the committee doing the website Walk Finder and IT. He also walks with friends in Cumbria, Hampshire and various places on holiday as you will see from his photo collection.

In July 2006 John’s business, Ratcliffe’s Stationers of Rotherham, became part of the BOS Office Supplies Group. This link takes you to the BOS Website where you can order products previously available from Ratcliffe’s. The shop premises in Rotherham have since been demolished.
